Hawks Drop Two in Conference Opener vs. Plattsburgh
NEW PALTZ, NY ¿ — The SUNY New Paltz softball team opened its conference season with a doubleheader loss to Plattsburgh this afternoon.
The Cardinals (6-10, 2-0) pushed home 22 runs in the two games winning the first 11-1 and taking the night cap 11-0.
In game one, junior pitcher Tracy Mitchell (London, Ontario) led the way both on the at the plate and on the mound. Mitchell, batting clean-up, went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in while scattering two hits and striking out six in a complete game effort.
Freshman outfielder Jamie Prudhomme (Cohoes, NY) was 1-for- 3 with two RBI that were apart of an eight-run fourth inning that blew the game open for the Cardinals.
Junior Wendy Del Orbe (Bronx, NY) went the distance for New Paltz and suffered the loss.
In game two, Plattsburgh scored four in the first inning and never looked back. Senior outfielder Randi Johnson (Saugerties, NY) led the game off with a triple and then stole home to send the Cardinals on their way. Johnson went 3-for-3 in the second game with three runs scored and two RBI.
Freshman Erika Clark (Franklinville, NY) pitched a five- inning complete game effort. She allowed just two hits and did not walk a batter.
Senior Kristin Ackermann (Middletown, NY) took the loss. She allowed seven hits and nine runs in three innings. New Paltz, who dropped to 0-8 overall and 0-2 in the SUNYAC will host Potsdam for two games tomorrow at 12 p.m.
