POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — Senior captain Tim Van Wyen (Sayville, NY) scored on a penalty kick and junior forward Mario Lavacca (Port Washington, NY) scored two minutes later in the second half to lead SUNY New Paltz to a 4-2 victory over King’s College in the second round of the Mid-Hudson Classic. The Hawks win, coupled with Vassar’s 3-2 win over Rhode Island College, gives New Paltz the tournament title on goal differential. Both Vassar and New Paltz finished 2-0 but the Hawks ended with a +3 goal differential to Vassar’s +2.
New Paltz got goals from junior midfielder Tom McCauley (Holbrook, NY) and sophomore midfielder Chris Daly (Washingtonville, NY) in the first seven minutes to take a 2-0 lead. Drew Flavell (Melbourne, FL) scored midway through the second half to bring the Monarchs within a goal.
Freshman midfielder Brett Shipe (Milton, PA) tied the score up at two 14 minutes into the second half. But with 18 minutes left in the game, Monarch’s goalkeeper Dan Upton (Bloomsburg, PA) was whistled for a foul inside the box leading to Van Wyen’s goal at 72:11.
Lavacca put the game away at 74:15 for the 4-2 final score.
Junior Michael Vaughan-Cherubin (Albany, NY) and senior Kevin Smith (Niskayuna, NY) combined to make two saves for the Hawks and Upton and freshman Trevor Riccobon (Medford, NJ) made six for King’s.
