Kean Beats Hawks on Penalty Strokes

UNION, NJ — Kean University outscored SUNY New Paltz 3-2 on the second set of penalty strokes to lift the Cougars to a 2-1 win. Kean improves to 1-0 while New Paltz falls to 1-2.

Kean controlled play in the first half outshooting the Hawks 9-2 in the first session but were unable to capitalize. With 11:30 to go in the game, New Paltz threatened to break the 0-0 tie as they were awarded a penalty stroke. Heather Downey (Scotia, NY) took the shot but was blocked by Cougar goalie Concetta Valerio (Norristown, PA). Five minutes later, Katie Schoonmaker (High Falls, NY) redirected a shot by Downey into the back of the goal for a 1-0 New Paltz lead. The Cougars came right back two minutes later to tie the score on a goal from Tina Broomfield (Ewing, NJ).

The two teams then battled through two overtime periods and two rounds of penalty strokes before Kean came out on top.

Valerio ended with 11 saves in the goal for the Cougars while Teresa McPeck (Stony Brook, NY) made nine saves for New Paltz.
