Cortland Hands Hawks 15-1 Defeat
CORTLAND, NY — Defending Division III national champion Cortland roughed up the New Paltz field hockey team Saturday 15-1, breaking school records for goal scoring and scoring margin.
Senior Julie Gentner (Williamsville, NY) recorded three goals and an assist and senior Stacey Russell (Rome, NY) added three goals to lead the Red Dragons. Junior Jessica Ueltschi (Holland Patent, NY) and senior Jen Angelillo (Westbury, NY) each chipped in with two goals apiece.
New Paltz’s lone goal came from freshman Patricia Erikson (Massapequa Park, NY) with 20:15 remaining in the game. Senior Jodi Novatka (Southampton, NY) picked up the assist. Freshman goalie Erika Engstrom (Montauk, NY) made seven first-half saves for the Hawks while sophomore Teresa McPeck (Stony Brook, NY) stopped 12 shots in the second half.
The loss makes the Hawks 2-6 overall and 1-2 in the SUNYAC. Cortland moves to 6-1 and 3-0 in the conference.
