Men’s Baseball Edges Hartwick

NEW PALTZ — New Paltz men’s baseball jumped on the visiting Hawks from Hartwick early, grabbing three runs in the opening three innings en route to a 6-4 win. The victory ups New Paltz’s record to 6-11-1 for the season.

The Hawks got on the board in the first when Mike Bucco (Washingtonville, NY) tagged up on a John Buonamano (Royersford, PA) fly out. In the third, Buonamano’s sacrifice bunt scored Paul Schropfer (Glen Oaks, NY) and Ernesto Sosa (Santa Domingo, DR) singled home Vinnie Perry (Kingston, NY) for a 3-0 lead. Hartwick came back with three runs in the 4th and one in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead going into the bottom half of the inning. New Paltz punched three runs home on five hits in the inning to take the lead 6-4, which ended up being the final score. Perry and Sosa had RBI singles in the inning, and Jeff Lackaye (Woodstock, NY) added an RBI double. John Miraldi (Denville, NJ) picked up the win for the Hawks, pitching five innings giving up four runs (three unearned) on four hits. Chris Schuon (Lake Katrine, NY) picked up the save.

Men’s baseball will play Oswego and Utica/Rome Saturday and Sunday at 12:00 in critical SUNYAC doubleheaders. The Hawks are currently 0-2 in the conference and will look to get on the plus side.
