Hunter Slips by Women’s Softball

NEW PALTZ — The Hunter Hawks escaped New Paltz with two wins over women’s softball Tuesday 13-11 and 7-6.

In game one, out of thirteen runs given up by the Hawks, none were earned. New Paltz committed nine errors in the field and five Hunter runners reached base on walks. Trailing 13-8 in the last of the seventh, Tiffany Danko (Goshen, NY) opened the inning with a double, and Jen Varrone (New Paltz, NY) singled her home to cut the lead to four. Varrone scored on a passed ball and Liz Hock (Latham, NY) tagged up on a Wendy Del Orbe (Bronx, NY) fly out to cut the lead to two with two out. Unfortunately, that was the last gasp for the Hawks as Tricia Cascio (Farmingville, NY) flew out to end the game. Jessica Schropfer (Glen Oaks, NY) went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI to lead New Paltz at the plate. Kristin Ackerman (Middletown, NY) went the distance on the hill giving up just five hits in the game.

In game two, the Hawks led 5-2 in the sixth inning but let the lead slip away as Hunter pounded out five runs in the top of the sixth and hung on for a 7-6 win. New Paltz had the tying run on base in the seventh but failed to drive her in. Tricia Cascio went 2-for-3 with 3 RBI to lead New Paltz and Jen Varrone was 2-for-3. Varrone took the loss on the mound going all seven innings giving up seven runs on ten hits.

New Paltz will be back in action tomorrow at home against Skidmore beginning at 3:30pm.
