NEW PALTZ — The development of communication, cooperation, critical thinking and creative expression skills will be the focus of a workshop at the State University of New York at New Paltz on Thursday, April 18 from 7-9 p.m. at the College Terrace Restaurant.
The workshop will explore issues specific to educators and human service professionals through a variety of interactive role-playing activities. The workshop will be facilitated by Dr. Marie-Claire Picher, co-founder of the Manhattan-based Theater of the Oppressed and an assistant professor of French and Spanish in the Department of Foreign Language at the College of Mount Saint Vincent and Manhattan College.
Picher will help participants explore their personal and social reality through physical dialogues, non-verbal imagery and problem solving processes — techniques used by the Manhattan-based Theater of Oppressed.
The Theater of the Oppressed was established in the early 1970’s and is a form of popular theater of, by and for people engaged in the struggle for liberation. The Theater of Oppressed is a participatory theater that fosters democratic and cooperative forms of interaction among participants.
The workshop is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the School of Education’s Humanistic/Multicultural Educational Program.
