Softball Gets First Win
NEW PALTZ — The New Paltz women’s softball team got their first win of the season Thursday against John Jay 14-13 in eight innings.
The Hawks trailed 12-9 going into the bottom of the seventh but punched across three to tie the score. Liz Hock’s (Latham, NY) two-RBI single evened the score at 12-12 and sent the game into extra innings. The Bloodhounds got a run in the top of the inning to take a one-run lead forcing New Paltz to come from behind again. The Hawks were up to the challenge though, as Jen Varrone (New Paltz, NY) doubled in the tying run, and Tiffany Danko’s (Goshen, NY) sacrifice fly scored pinch runner Lisa Taub (Greenlawn, NY) ending the game. Varrone got the win on the mound for the Hawks giving up thirteen hits and striking out five.
New Paltz returns to the field Saturday at RPI.
