Softball Drops Two to Utica/Rome

NEW PALTZ — The women’s softball team opened their SUNYAC season Saturday falling to the Utica/Rome Wildcats 12-3 and 6-4. The losses drop the Hawks’ record to 1-10 on the year.

In game one, the Hawks rapped out nine hits but could only muster three runs off of Wildcat pitcher Liz Horne. Hurler Jen Varrone (New Paltz, NY) went the distance surrendering ten runs on seventeen hits for the Hawks. Tiffany Danko (Goshen, NY), Katie Monahan (Port Jefferson Station, NY), and Valerie Blackman (Castle Creek, NY) each had two hits apiece in the game.

In game two, Tricia Cascio (Farmingville, NY) led the Hawks with a single, double, and two RBI while teammate Jen Born (Walroth, NY) had two singles. Kristin Ackerman (Middletown, NY) pitched the complete game for the Hawks giving up six runs on eight hits, striking out two in the 6- 4 loss.

Women’s softball returns to the field Tuesday when they travel to Russell Sage for a 3:00 pm start.
