NEW PALTZ — With the current war on terrorism as a backdrop, “Geopolitics of War in the Middle East” will be the subject of a lecture by Michael T. Klare at the State University of New York at New Paltz on Thursday, Feb. 21.
Klare is the five-college director and professor of Peace and World Security Studies, a joint appointment at Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke and Smith Colleges and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He currently serves on the board of directors of the Arms Control Association and the Educational Foundation for Nuclear Science, and is a member of the Committee on International Security Studies of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Previously, he served as the director of the program on National Security of the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington, D.C.
Klare has written widely on U.S defense policy, the arms trade, and world security affairs. His most recent publication is Rogue States and Nuclear Outlaws. He is also the defense correspondent of The Nation magazine, a contributing editor of Current History and a member of the editorial board of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists.
“The president [Bush] and his administration have talked about expanding the war to the Middle East, Iran and Iraq in particular,” said Lee Bell, chair of Educational Studies at SUNY New Paltz, and a member of the campus 9/11 Response Planning Committee. “This lecture provides a context for looking at U.S foreign policy and discussing important issues concerning it.”
The lecture is sponsored by the 9/11 Response Planning Committee, which is comprised of SUNY New Paltz faculty, staff and students who plan programming to address issues raised by the September terrorist attacks and their aftermath.
