Men and Women’s B-Ball Swept by Oswego

NEW PALTZ — The visiting Lakers from Oswego came into town taking two from the New Paltz basketball teams Friday night. In the women’s game the Lady Hawks fell 58-55 and the men lost by a final of 85-79.

The women’s game was a tight match throughout with the Lakers breaking away at times only to see the resilient Lady Hawks surge back to keep the game close. Down the stretch, it was the clutch free throw shooting of Laker Jacqueline Luszczek who hit 8 of 8 from the line that gave them the win. Silver Williams (Newburgh, NY) led the Hawks with 18 points while Kim Weigel (Whitestone, NY) added 16.

In the men’s game, the Lakers’ Michael Steen crushed the Hawks scoring 21 points in the opening half giving his team an eight point lead at the break. The Hawks turned up the intensity on both ends of the court in the second half holding Steen to just six and shooting 55% from the field. Unfortunately, some timely three-point baskets by the Lakers proved to be too much. Pat Stirk (Milford, CT) had a game high 28 points to pace New Paltz. Steve Ott (New Paltz, NY) added 22.

Both men and women’s teams will be in action again tomorrow against Geneseo.
