Women’s Tennis Finishes 6th at SUNYACS

MANLIUS — In the final team standings, New Paltz finished with 12 points behind Geneseo (21), Plattsburgh (18), Cortland (17), Brockport (16), and Oneonta (15) at the SUNYAC Championships in Manlius, NY this weekend.

New Paltz finished with 3 singles players and 1 doubles team making it all the way to the finals.

Kerry Farrell (Rockville Centre, NY) won her quarterfinal match over Potsdam’s Lauren Wielkiewicz 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 and her semifinal match over Plattsburgh’s Debra LaPorte 6-1, 6- 3 before falling in the finals to Geneseo’s Gena Tallarini 5-7, 3-6.

Jessica Smith (Oneida, NY) made it to the fifth singles final after victories over Plattsburgh’s Kathy Stata 6-4, 5- 7, 6-2 and Cortland’s Megan McKenna 7-5, 3-6, 6-2. Smith lost in the finals to Brockport’s Carey Webster 2-6, 2-6.

In the sixth singles early rounds, Amie Larson (Port Jervis, NY) defeated Cortland’s Karen O’Sullivan 6-1, 7-6 and Oneonta’s Allison Greene 6-3, 7-6. In the finals, Plattsburgh’s Julie Slattery defeated Larson 7-5, 6-4.

Farrell returned to the finals in first doubles with her partner Barbara Slovak (Harriman, NY). In the quarterfinals, Farrell and Slovak defeated Oneonta’s Sara Fiekert and Amy Merwarth 6-2, 6-1 and in the semifinals defeated Geneseo’s Shalini Sudarsanan and Gena Tallarini 5- 7, 6-0, 6-1. Cortland’s Kris Grosso and Steph Krauz were victorious in the final though defeating Farrell and Slovak 6-0, 6-1.
