NEW PALTZ — On Tuesday, October 16, 2001 faculty members at the Music Department at SUNY New Paltz welcome the college and surrounding community to an evening of musical performance highlighting the various styles and genres represented in the department. The concert is held in the McKenna Theatre at 8:00 PM. Tickets are available at the door for $5 adults, $4 seniors/faculty/staff, and $3 students.
Faculty Sampler offers an opportunity to hear varied musical styles performed by the accomplished SUNY New Paltz Music faculty. The diversity of the Department is clearly represented in the evening’s program. Louis Bonifati, clarinet, and Ruthanne Schempf, piano, are first to the stage with Gabriel Pierne’s Canzonetta. Guitarist Gregory Dinger, well known in the region for his radio show on 100.1 WDST, performs pieces for classical guitar. Carol Cowan and Emily Faxon, violin; Valentina Charlap-Evans, viola; and Susan Seligman, cello; comprise of the Hudson Valley Philharmonic String Quartet, the SUNY New Paltz quartet-in-residence. The HVPSQ will perform Ernest Chausson’s Chanson Perpetuelle, with Ruthanne Schempf, piano, and Barbara Hardgrave, mezzo-soprano. Shifting to a contemporary composition, Joel Evans, oboe, joins Valentina Charlap-Evans and Susan Seligman for The Walls of Morlais Castle, by Hilary Tann. The evening ends with a freeform selection of jazz standards, faculty arrangements and original compositions, performed by the Faculty Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Mark Dziuba.
