NEW PALTZ — Two thesis exhibitions by graduating students in the Department of Art are the first to appear in the newly renovated Chandler and teaching galleries of the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art at SUNY New Paltz. The Bachelor of Fine Arts exhibition will run from Saturday, April 28 through Wednesday, May 2, 2001. The Master of Fine Arts exhibition will run from Saturday, May 5 through Wednesday, May 9, 2001. Public receptions will take place on Friday, April 27 from 6-8 pm and Friday, May 4 from 6-8 pm. Thesis exhibitions are presented bi-annually and represent the culmination of a focused study within a particular medium. Artists will graduate with either a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) or a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in one of the following areas: Ceramics, Graphic Design, Metals, Photography, Printmaking, Painting, or Sculpture.
“The work represents significant research, exploration of ideas, and mastery of material, coalescing in artistic expression,” says Dr. Kristin Rauch, chair of the Art Department. “The Art Department places great value in these exhibitions. They are the manifestation of time, energy, and thought that goes into a university program in art.”
Jessica Hough, a curator at the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art in Ridgefield, Connecticut will curate the BFA exhibition as a group show. Included among Ms. Hough’s numerous exhibition credits are “Glee: Painting Now,” “The Nude in Contemporary Art,” and “Faith: The Impact of Judeo-Christian Religion on Art at the Millennium.”
The MFA show is planned, designed, and installed by the MFA students in consultation with museum staff.
