Baseball Team Defeats Colonials Again
FORT PIERCE, FLA. — For the second time in five days, SUNY New Paltz got the best of Western Connecticut State on the baseball field. And again it was a close game.
New Paltz snapped a two-game losing skid with a 5-2 win over the Colonials on Thursday morning at the Lawnwood Complex. The (4-5) Hawks had previously defeated Western Connecticut State, 10-8, on Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore righthander Rich Bizelia (Massapequa/Kellenberg) pitched a solid game, scattering six hits and limiting the Colonials to only a two-run sixth. Junior shortstop Jeff Lackaye (Woodstock/Kingston) continued his torrid southern hitting assault (team-leading .529 batting average and .636 on-base percentage in Florida), with a 1-for-3 effort at the plate, while sophomore first baseman Bryan Monti (Marlboro/Marlboro) went 3-for-4, with a double and an RBI.
Senior Brian Clarke (Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia/Lower Sackville) went 2-for-3 with a run scored and his team-leading sixth double of the season, and Dutchess County products Mark Milroy (Staatsburg/Roosevelt) and Nick Vegeto (Poughkeepsie/Poughkeepsie) combined to go 2-for-5 with two runs scored for the Hawks.
New Paltz, which has now won three of their last five, improves to 3-4 on its Florida trip, heading into tomorrow’s southern finale. Senior righthander Steve Dermentzis (Scotia/Scotia) will get the start for New Paltz at 9 a.m. against Earlham (Indiana) College.
