Big Inning Costs Baseball Team Against Grinnell

FORT PIERCE, FLA. — A 12-run Grinnell third was the difference, as SUNY New Paltz lost its second straight baseball game, 18-9, on Wednesday evening at the Lawnwood Complex.

The Pioneers had 12 of their 20 hits – including two doubles – in the decisive third. New Paltz (3-5), meanwhile, banged out nine hits and scored nine runs over the first five innings, but dug too deep a hole early.

Junior designated hitter John Buonamano (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) had another strong game on offense, going 1-for-2 with a double, two runs scored and two runs batted in, while senior third baseman Brian Clarke (Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia/Lower Sackville) went 2-for-4 with a double and a run batted in to continue his dominance at the plate.

Sophomore righthander Rich Bizelia (Massapequa/Kellenberg) will look to help New Paltz – 2-4 on its Florida trip with two games remaining – get back on the winning track tomorrow against Western Connecticut State at 9 a.m. at the Lawnwood Complex. The Hawks defeated Western Connecticut State earlier this week (10-8 on Sunday).
