Hawks Lose Florida Baseball Finale

FORT PIERCE, FLA. — SUNY New Paltz completed its Florida trip in much the same way as it started it, allowing a big inning en route to a disappointing loss.

A five-run second inning on Friday morning was the difference, as Earlham (Ind.) College defeated New Paltz, 9-4, at the Lawnwood Complex.

Reserves Kevin Smith (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) and Phil Scaglione (Glen Oaks/Cardozo) made the most of their starting assignments, contributing two hits apiece. Sophomore first baseman Bryan Monti (Marlboro/Marlboro) also had two hits, including a RBI triple, and four other New Paltz starters had one hit each.

Sophomore Jeff Bond (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) pitched well in relief of Hawk senior righthander Steve Dermentzis, scattering five hits over the remaining six innings and allowing just one earned run.

New Paltz (4-6), which finished its Florida trip with a 3-5 record, will next play at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Vassar College. The game had originally been scheduled to be played in New Paltz, but was moved due to current field conditions. For this same reason, the Hawks’ scheduled home-opening doubleheader against Husson and Castleton State on Sunday has also been cancelled.
