NEW PALTZ — The Symphonic Band of SUNY New Paltz, a 50-member ensemble under the direction of Dr. William McCann, will perform a concert of varied works for wind ensemble. The concert is held in McKenna Theatre on Tuesday, December 5 at 8:00 PM.
The program includes “Candide Suite,” a medley of familiar tunes from the musical version of the Voltaire classic novel. The selection includes excerpts from “Best of All Possible Worlds,” “Auto-Da-Fe,” “Glitter and Be Gay,” and “Make Our Garden Grow” among others. The program also includes the American folk song “Shenandoah”, arranged by Frank Ticheli. This early American song, which tells of an American settler’s love for a native woman, is variously attributed a Pennsylvania coal miner, a protégé of Stephen Foster, and a housewife in Lexington, Kentucky.
Numerous other works arranged especially for symphonic band will be performed. These include “Celebrations,” by John Zdechlik, “Festivo,” by Edward Gregson, and Pulizer Prize-winner Howard Hansen’s “Chorale and Alleluia.”
Tickets to the Symphonic Band concert are available at the box office in McKenna Theatre beginning at 7:00 PM on December 5. Ticket prices are $5 general, $4 senior citizens, and $3 students.
