NEW PALTZ — Phyllis R. Freeman, associate professor of psychology at SUNY New Paltz, has been appointed dean of the university’s Graduate School for a three-year term. The appointment became effective July 1.
Freeman has been acting dean of the Graduate School since January 1999. She replaced Robert Mumper, who held the position since 1993.
Freeman came to SUNY New Paltz in 1975 and served as coordinator of the university’s graduate program in psychology for 11 years. In 1996, she was awarded the first SUNY New Paltz College of Liberal Arts & Sciences Teacher of the Year Award.
An experimental psychologist, Dean Freeman has lectured and published on topics including alcoholism, prenatal drug effects on behavior, the history of medicine (psychiatry), and postsecondary pedagogy. She has received grants and awards for her work in these areas as well. Freeman is also co-editor of a recent volume titled Wise Women: Reflections of Teachers at Midlife (Routlege, 2000).
