NEW PALTZ — The University at Albany/SUNY Doctorate in Educational Administration & Policy Studies, being offered in collaboration with the State University of New York at New Paltz, is scheduled to begin in New Paltz this summer.
Students must apply to the University at Albany by April 15, 2000 to be considered for admission in the first group of students. Faculty from the University at Albany’s Educational Administration and Policy Studies department have stressed that students accepted to this program must be experienced educators. The University’s residency requirement is expected to be waived for these students based on their educational background and work experience.
A meeting was held recently on the New Paltz campus and attended (via video-conference technology) by Dr. Frederick Dembowski and Dr. Steven Doellefeld of the University at Albany and Dr. Robert Michael, Dr. Jan Hammond and Dr. Kathleen Kraus of SUNY New Paltz. Details and recent decisions regarding the doctoral program were discussed.
This innovative program will offer courses on the New Paltz campus taught by SUNY New Paltz faculty and by University at Albany faculty, either in person or via video technology. The first course, Educational Administration & Management Theory, will be taught by Dr. Jan Hammond this summer, followed by Introductionto Social Analysis, taught by Dr. Joel Spring, also of SUNY New Paltz, this fall. Advanced Organizational Analysis will be taught by Dr. Frederick Dembowski, University at Albany, via video conferencing this fall.
Some courses will be held in Albany but travel is expected to be minimal and scheduled at times convenient to students. SUNY New Paltz faculty will also serve on dissertation committees and share their individual expertise with students who have similar research interests.
A number of early applicants have been accepted and indications are that the first group will consist of approximately fifty percent K-12 educators and fifty percent higher education faculty and administrators.
