NEW PALTZ — Susan Ohanian, longtime teacher and writer, author of One Size Fits a Few: The Folly of Educational Standards, will recount her quest to make sense of the standards movement when she speaks at a mini-conference at SUNY New Paltz on Wednesday, September 29.
“Can One Size Fit All? A Dialogue about Tougher Standards, High-Stakes Testing and Diverse Students” will be Ohanian’s topic for the 4:30 p.m. session coordinated by the Mid- Hudson Teacher Center (MHTC). Registration and a buffet will begin at 3:30 p.m. in the Terrace Restaurant and Conference Center. Following her talk, a panel of educators will respond and then participants will gather for small and large group discussions The program will conclude at 7:00 p.m.
Nancy Schniedewind, a member of the educational studies faculty, noted that the speaker will discuss how educators advocate high academic expectations and outcomes for all students, but have various views about effective approaches to reach the goal. Ohanian will look at the effects of tougher standards and high-stakes testing on diverse students, teachers and the teaching/learning process in New York State.

The Terrace Restaurant and Conference Center is located on the southwest side of the campus between Elting Gym and Sojourner Truth Library. It can be accessed by turning east on Southside Loop, off Route 208, or by turning west on Southside Loop, off Route 32 South. Parking is available in nearby lots.
