New Paltz To Host ECAC Final Four

NEW PALTZ — Top-seeded New Paltz earned the right to host the ECAC Division III Men’s Basketball Final Four with a 99-93 quarterfinal win over eighth-seeded Union College on Wednesday night at Elting Gymnasium.

The (16-11) Hawks were led by the hot shooting of Joe Wiggins (25 points, nine rebounds, four steals), Mac Cavanaugh (25 points, three blocks), and Woody Edwards (23 points, six assists, four steals). Union (15-11), meanwhile, received 28 and 27 points, respectively, from David Musella and Robert Groelz in a losing effort.

New Paltz will face fifth-seeded St. Lawrence (16-9) in Saturday’s 8:00 p.m. semifinal. The Saints edged cross-town rival Potsdam, 72-69, on Wednesday at Maxcy Hall. In the other Saturday semifinal, #3 Rensselaer will play #7 Alfred at 6:00 p.m. Rensselaer coasted past #6 Nazareth, 67-56, while Alfred upset #2 seed Fredonia, 70-59.
