New Paltz Defeats Vassar

NEW PALTZ — In another five-game thriller between ranked teams, SUNY New Paltz defeated cross-river rival Vassar College, 17-30, 30-25, 30-23, 25-30, 15-9, in men’s volleyball on Thursday night at Elting Gymnasium.

It marked the second time this season that New Paltz (13-3), ranked eighth in Division III, and winners of eight straight, has defeated the Brewers. Last weekend, Vassar (7-6) upset top-ranked Juniata, 3-1, to move up to third place in Monday’s national rankings.

Sophomore setter Beau Warren, the AVCA/Sports Imports Division III National Player of the Week, had his second match with double figures in at least three categories, collecting 22 assists, 14 kills and 10 digs. Actually, he went a step further last Thursday, notching the nation’s only quadruple-double against Division II East Stroudsburg. He and teammate Robert Manosca (31 assists, 16 kills, five digs tonight) have accounted for four of the six triple-doubles recorded nationally this season.

Christopher Wright (four blocks, two service aces) meanwhile had 16 kills to get to within 12 kills of 1,500 for his New Paltz career.

New Paltz returns to action on Saturday, when it hosts a tri-match with Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Long Island University-Southampton. The Hawks play M.I.T. at 1 p.m., and return to face Southampton – after the two visitors are done battling it out – in the 5 p.m. nightcap.
