Student nominated for International Design Award
SUNY New Paltz is proud to announce that Steven Gordon Holman ’14 has been nominated for the prestigious Talente award, and will be featured in the Internationale Handwerksmesse (International Fair for Skilled Trades) to be held March 2014 in Munich Germany. Holman, who is originally from Leamington Delta, Utah, is a Master of Fine Arts candidate in the metal program at New Paltz.
Each year, Talente invites young artists, craftsmen, makers, designers and technicians from around the world to present at the International Fair. Holman’s works entitled “Geode Torque” and “Mother’s Pearls, A Rabbit’s Den” will be featured in a special 600 m2 exhibition alongside other nominees in jewelry, ceramics, furniture, textiles and technology design and in the extensive Talente print catalog. From the group of nominees, an international jury of prominent artists, curators and critics select the winner of the Talente award.
Talente is the foremost international showcase of craftwork and design based on intensive research, formal explorations and technical achievements that demonstrate new, unusual or surprising solutions. Invited participants must be under the age of 33 and the works must be crafted by hand. The organization’s goal through the competition is to encourage gifted young people and to show the future potential of craft making.
Last year, Talente’s organizers received 700 applications for participation from which 100 participants were chosen. Many participants and their mentors travel to Munich for the show, reflecting its importance as an international meeting point and event that showcases important work from around the globe and forecasts upcoming trends in craft and design.
The metal program at New Paltz is among the largest graduate metal programs in the country. It has earned the distinction of being ranked No.1 in the U.S. News and World Report list of best graduate programs.
Students in the program learn the technical, aesthetic, and conceptual aspects of contemporary jewelry and metalsmithing in a state-of-the-art facility.
