SUNY New Paltz Scholarship Honors Baggerman Family
NEW PALTZ — The Baggerman Family Scholarship Fund, memorializing the lives of William and Susanna Baggerman, parents of William Jr. and Susan M. Baggerman, has been established at the State University of New York at New Paltz. The scholarship will be awarded for the first time this fall. The deadline for application is March 18, 2000.
Susan M. Baggerman, the donor of the scholarship, received her bachelor of science degree in elementary education from SUNY New Paltz in 1957. She completed her certificate of advanced study in educational administration and supervision at New Paltz in 1972. Susan was an elementary school teacher for 36 years at the Newbridge Road School in North Bellmore (Nassau County), NY.
SUNY New Paltz vice president for advancement, Richard S. Podgorski, thanked Ms. Baggerman for her generosity toward the campus. “It is very fitting that a lifelong teacher like Susan is reaching out to help the young teachers who will follow her footsteps into the classroom,” Podgorski noted. “It is all the more meaningful in that she has established this scholarship as a memorial to her own parents. The campus is very grateful for her thoughtful generosity.”
To be eligible for the Baggerman Family Scholarship, applicants must meet the following requirements: a) Be enrolled in the SUNY New Paltz elementary education program at either the undergraduate or graduate level. b) Have an 85 or higher grade point average as an entering freshman or a cumulative grade point average of 2.8 or higher if a returning, transfer or graduate student. c) First preference will be given to students who have attended either North Bellmore (New York) Public Schools or Pine Bush (New York) Public Schools. Documentation of applicant’s attendance will be requested.
Recipients are selected annually during the spring semester by the campus Scholarship Committee and the award shall be applied to the following fall and spring semester’s tuition. Students are allowed and encouraged to apply for and receive other scholarships in addition to the Baggerman Family Scholarship.
