Geneseo shuts out New Paltz with strong defense
NEW PALTZ- The SUNY New Paltz field hockey team fell to the Blue Knights of Geneseo, by a score of 2-0, on Saturday afternoon on the Turf Field.
The Blue Knights first struck at 33:03, in the first half with a goal by Stephanie Maisonet, which was assisted by Michelle Milkovich. Geneseo kept ripping shots at the New Paltz cage with a total of eight alone in the first half.
In the 21st minute, Stephanie Maisonet’s shot was saved by the diving Elizabeth Tong (Woodstock/Onteora Central) to keep the game at 1-0.
At 15:30, Sarah Schloss (Brant Lake/North Warren) was on a breakaway with a chance to score, but it was broken up by a strong Blue Knight defense, holding the Geneseo advantage 1-0 at the half.
At 33:50, in the second half, Tong saved a shot from Geneseo with a brilliant left kick save. Minutes later, Jean Nolan of Geneseo found the back of the cage to make it a final score of 2-0.
Geneseo’s goalkeeper Nicole Zito recorded the win in net for the Blue Knights, earning her second shutout of the season.
Tong records the loss in net for the Hawks, allowing two goals on 16 shots, saving 11.
The Hawks fall to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in SUNYAC play. New Paltz returns to the field Wednesday, September 23rd when they travel to Cedar Crest. Game time is set for 4:00 pm.
