Welcome message and announcements from Student Association President Jordan Hennix

The following message was sent to all students via email on Sept. 3.

Dear Fellow New Paltz Students,

Welcome and welcome back! My name is Jordan Hennix and I am the President of the Student Association at SUNY New Paltz. The purpose of this email is to inform you all about what will be happening within the coming weeks, what the Student Association is about, and information about Senators.

The Student Association is the primary student governing body of SUNY New Paltz. We are composed of three branches: the Executive Board, the Senate, and the Judicial Board. The Student Association has many responsibilities, including the following but not limited to: overseeing the $1.3 million budget that makes up the student activity fee, writing and passing legislation regarding issues on campus, and meeting with the college administration to discuss current affairs alongside being a voice for the student body.

Today, we want to announce that the Student Association Senate candidacy forms for the 2021-2022 school year are located on Engage and will close on September 7th at noon. These elections will be conducted from September 14th to September 16th.

Student Senators – Run for a Seat!

Student Senators serve as an elected representative body of the student body. Their job consists of advocating for student concerns and developing legislation appropriately. Senators are required to sit on 2 committees and attend bi-weekly senate meetings. These are positions within our new representative model based on 1 seat for each Residence hall, 1 seat depending on your class grade, 1 graduate, 1 commuter, 1 transfer, 1 international, and 2 at large seats. (Senators-at-large do not represent a targeted group, but rather represent the student body as a whole).

Being a part of the Senate is a wonderful opportunity to get involved, network, and branch out with other students to represent the student body. If elected as a Senator, you will attend bi-weekly Senate meetings and have the opportunity to serve on SA committees, faculty governance committees, or college wide committees. This is a wonderful leadership opportunity to build your communication, interpersonal, and advocacy skills as well as network on campus. The link to the election candidacy form can be found here:

Presidential Search

For those of you who are not aware and need a reminder, this academic year will be President Donald P. Christian’s final year as President of SUNY New Paltz. With that being said, there is a presidential search that is currently underway!

The presidential search firm has scheduled a student listening session via Zoom, link below, on Thursday, Sept. 9 from 5:00 to 6:00 PM! This is an opportunity for us as a collective student body to voice what qualities/traits we have of the next president, the challenges and opportunities they believe a next president will face, the expectations we, the student body, will uphold as well as why they came to New Paltz.

The Presidential search firm would love to meet with several students, faculty and staff to hear more from our community as to what it is we are searching for in a new president! We hope to see all of you attend next week!

COVID-19

Reminder to everyone that according to SUNY guidelines, everyone must show proof of full vaccination by September 27th. If not done so you will be disenrolled from the institution. As of right now if you are not vaccinated, the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is the only one that will clear you for the guidelines immediately as it is a one shot vaccine unless you are exempt, as it is too late to either get the first shot of the Moderna vaccine and still be cleared for the SUNY guidelines. However, the last day to register for the first shot of the Pfizer vaccine for the school is this upcoming Monday September 7th which will still clear you for SUNY guidelines.

In closing, remember that the Student Association is here for you! Should you have any questions, comments, or concerns feel free to contact any of us, and we’ll be happy to assist you! Until then, stay safe and have a marvelous semester!

Warm Regards,

Jordan Hennix

Student Association President (president.newpaltzsa@gmail.com)
