SUNY New Paltz Women’s Tennis Team Advances to SUNYAC Finals

MANLIUS, NY — The SUNY New Paltz women’s tennis team began play today for the SUNYAC Tournament at the Eastside Racquet Club. Last year the Hawks completed the tournament with a second place finish. This year the Hawks entered the tournament as the number two seed in hopes to defeat defending Champions Cortland and capture a SUNYAC title.

At the end of play this evening, the Hawks captured a team total 20 points placing them in first place, Cortland is a close second with 19 points. The SUNY New Paltz tennis team looks to tomorrow for the completion of play.

For the first time in school history the entire singles team for the Hawks have advanced into finals play. The Hawks were lead at number one singles by sophomore Eri Yamakawa (Eastchester, NY) who defeated Nicole Lidell of Oneonta in straight sets 6-0, 6-1. Yamakawa advances to the finals tomorrow for a rematch with Laurie Dorscheid of Cortland. Freshman, Dana Lim (New City, NY) defeated Krissy Feikert of Geneseo in straight sets 6-2,6-4. Lim also advances to the finals round tomorrow to face Amanda Husson of Cortland. At number three singles for the Hawks, freshman Katherine Ketigian (Garden City, NY) beat Vivian Chueng of Geneseo in straight sets 6-4, 6-3. Ketigian advances to the finals tomorrow where she will meet Ashley Abar of Cortland. Senior Maggie Fenton (East Meadow, NY) defeated Kristen Donnelly of Oneonta 7-6, 6-0. Sophomore Jen Larson (Port Jervis, NY) defeated Sierra Summerville of Fredonia in straight sets 6-2, 7-6. Freshman Brittany Gilligan (Saratoga Springs, NY) beat Jen Hemedinger of Cortland 6-2, 6-4. Both Larson and Gilligan advance to finals play tomorrow.

In doubles action, all three of the Hawks doubles team won today and advance to semi finals play tomorrow. Lim and Yamakawa beat Johnson and Pappi of Plattsburgh 6-0, 6-1, while Larson and Fenton defeated Circellia and Higgins of Plattsburgh 6-1, 6-1. The dynamic duo of sisters Ashley and Lindsay Trifiletti (Mamaroneck, NY) continue their stellar play defeating Donnelly and Wehrenberg of Oneonta in Straight sets 6-1, 6-3.

The Hawks continue play tomorrow with singles finals starting at 9am with doubles semi finals and finals to follow.
