Women’s Tennis Team Takes Second Place at SUNYAC Tournament

MANLIUS, NY — The SUNY New Paltz women’s tennis team completed play today for the SUNYAC Tournament at the Eastside Racquet Club. The Hawks finished the weekend with a dominate performance to capture second place in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament.

Freshman, Dana Lim (New City, NY) defeated Amanda Husson of Cortland 7-5, 6-2 in the final round to prevail as the SUNYAC Champion at number two singles. Lim was not alone, the Hawks freshman Brittany Gilligan (Saratoga Springs, NY) toppled Sierra Summerville of Fredonia 6-0, 6-4 en route to her first SUNYAC title at number six singles.

Sophmore Eri Yamakawa (Eastchester, NY) lost a tough match in the championship at number one singles to Laurie Dorscheid of Cortland 6-2, 6-1. Freshman Katherine Ketigian (Garden City, NY) came up short in the final round against Ashley abar of Cortland falling 6-0, 6-0 in straight sets, while senior Maggie Fenton (East Meadow, NY) battled a tough lossn at number four singles against Andrea TerBush of Cortland. At number five singles, sophmore Jen Larson (Port Jervis, NY) could not withstand the attack of Meredith McCaslin of Cortland losing 7-5, 6-2.

In doubles action, all three of the Hawks doubles team won in the semi finals, advancing the Hawks into the doubles finals. At the end of semi finals play, the Hawks had a one point lead over the Red Dragons of Cortland. Needing to win two out of three matches to gain the conference title, SUNY New Paltz played thier hearts out in the finals.

At number one doubles Lim and Yamakawa upset Dorscheid and Husson of Cortland in semi finals play, falling in the first set 2-6, but then closing out the match 6-3, 7-5.1. In the finals, Lim and Yamakawa won the first set 2-4, but Feikert and Greiner of Geneseo came away with the next two sets 6-4, 6-3. At number two doubles Larson and Fenton were defeated in the finals to TerBush and McCaslin of Cortland 7-5, 6-2. The dynamic duo of sisters Ashley and Lindsay Trifiletti (Mamaroneck, NY) cruised through the semi fianls, but fell short against Abar and Hemedinger of Cortland 6-2, 6-1 at number three doubles for the Hawks.

At the end of play this evening, the Hawks captured a team total 28 points placing them in second behinde a repeat performance by Cortland taking fiirst place with 31 points. The SUNY New Paltz women’s tennis team captured a new school record, with all players in signles and doubles play advancing into the championship match.

The SUNY New Paltz women’s tennis team will return to tournament action on Friday, October 14 when they travel to the New York State Women’s Colligiate Athletic Association Tennis Championship.
