Nominations Sought for Carol Eckman Society

NEW PALTZ, NY — The SUNY New Paltz Department of Athletics is seeking nominations for this year’s Carol Eckman Society. The annual breakfast and ceremony will be held on January 30, 2005.

Each year, former SUNY New Paltz female student-athletes are inducted into the society based upon their athletic experience while at SUNY New Paltz and, more importantly, their continued service to young women and girls in both athletic and professional development.

Named for the former Assistant Professor of Physical Education and Coach of basketball, softball, tennis and field hockey at SUNY New Paltz from 1962-67, the Carol Eckman Society strives to serve as an extension of her far reaching ideals of courage, honesty, dedication to purpose, and above all else, commitment to student-athletes. Eckman, as the head women’s basketball coach for West Chester University, was instrumental in the organization of the first ever women’s collegiate national basketball tournament in 1969. Eckman was a tireless worker and never stopped her mission to garner recognition and support for women’s athletics until her death from cancer in 1985.

The deadline for nominations is November 1. Please contact Senior Woman’s Administrator and Head Women’s Soccer Colleen Bruley at (845) 257-3918 or at bruleyc@lan.newpaltz.edu for more information.
