Hawks Sweep New Paltz Invitational
NEW PALTZ, NY — A near two-week layoff had little affect on the SUNY Paltz women’s volleyball team who won all four of its matches to capture the 2004 SUNY New Paltz Invitational.
After a 3-0 win over conference rival Oneonta to open the tournament last evening, the Hawks began the day with a 30-23, 30-12, 30-18 win over Mount St. Mary. Junior outside hitter Andrea Kaiser (Blue Point, NY) led the way with 10 kills and a .450 hitting percentage.
SUNY New Paltz then defeated Elmira 3-1 (30-28, 30-18, 18-30, 30-24) behind 15 kills and 21 digs by Kaiser and 49 assists by freshman setter Kate Becofsky (Altamont, NY). The third game loss by the Hawks was their only blemish of the tournament.
SUNY New Paltz then cruised to a 3-0 win over SUNY Farmingdale in the finale. Sophomore Franchesca Rodriguez (Schenectady, NY) led a balanced attack with eight kills in a 30-13, 30-24, 30-16 victory.
The Hawks have won five straight matches and stand at 7-2 on the year.
