Student marketing association wins international award
NEW PALTZ — The Student Chapter of the American Marketing Association at the State University of New York at New Paltz received the award for Outstanding Regional Chapter at the 26th American Marketing Association’s Annual International Collegiate Conference held on March 27 in New Orleans, La.
The chapter received the Outstanding Regional Chapter award for excellence in all areas: strategic planning, fundraising activities, professional student development, community service, membership activities and communications. This award is given for providing programs designed to enhance the professional skills of its student members, and resulted from the quality workshops the AMA offered throughout the year, including the Annual Business Day Conference.
Theodore Clark, faculty advisor and professor of the School of Business, stated that although the chapter had won several national awards in the past, it had been pursuing the goal of Outstanding Chapter for the past 5 years.
“If you want to understand the scale of their accomplishments,” Clark noted, “it’s equivalent to being in the ‘final four’ of the NCAA basketball playoffs.”
Representing the SUNY New Paltz chapter were professor Clark, and students; Cherette Furr, AMA president; Monica Velesse, vice president of programming; Kris Thonton, vice president of finance; and Christine Fedele, vice president of promotions.
“We are very proud of our students and of Ted Clark,” said Hadi Salavitabar, dean of the School of Business. “These students competed against colleges such as Penn State, NYU, Baruch, Pace and Buffalo State. Their achievement in New Orleans shows the quality of education students receive at our school.”
The conference took place in New Orleans from March 24 – 27 and was attended by 1,400 students and 92 faculty advisors from chapters across the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. Of the 380 AMA International Chapters, 120 competed for awards.
