SUNY New Paltz Athletic Hall of Fame Ceremony Set For May 1
NEW PALTZ, NY — The SUNY New Paltz Athletics Hall of Fame will open its doors to two new members this spring. Tyrone Robinson and Mark Sargent, who both starred for the Hawks during the 1970 s and 80 s, will be enshrined during the 12th New Paltz Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Saturday, May 1 at 5:30 p.m. in The College Terrace Restaurant.
Robinson ranks as one of the top players in the history of the men’s basketball program. A 6-1 forward, he is third on the Hawks’ all-time scoring list with 1,625 points. As a freshman in 1978, Robinson averaged 20 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists per game and earned ECAC Rookie of the Year and all-state accolades. In 1980, he earned All-CACC honors while leading the Hawks to a then school record 17 wins.
Sargent helped lead the men’s swimming program to SUNYAC Championships in 1986 and 1989. He won eight individual conference titles and three medley relay titles during his four-year career. As a senior in 1989, he garnered three SUNYAC titles and was the recipient of the James Fulton Award honoring the male swimmer in the SUNYAC who combines athletic accomplishment with academic achievement over a four-year period. Sargent was a seven-time NCAA Division III qualifier and the winner of the Floyd Patterson award in 1988 and the Heinz Ahlmeyer Award in 1989.
