Hawks Sweep Final Day of 10-Game Florida Trip
FORT PIERCE, FL — The SUNY New Paltz baseball team swept the final day of its 10-day Florida trip with wins over Scranton and Utica College. The Hawks went 6-4 during their annual spring trip and will return home with a record of 6-11.
In game one, SUNY New Paltz used a 17-hit attack to defeat the University of Scranton 16-9. Freshman Justin Buonamano (Royersford, PA) keyed a seven-run first with a three run homer. Buonamano was 2-for-3 on the day. Sophomore Vinny McAdams (Little Falls, NY) also enjoyed a 2-for-3 day. He homered as part of three-run third to put the Hawks ahead 13-7. McAdams also doubled and drove in five on the afternoon. Sophomore Pete Espositio (Brooklyn, NY) went 4-for-4 and drove in four for SUNY New Paltz who collected its second win of the trip over the Royals. Sophomore Greg Vignoli (Commack, NY) pitched three and a third innings of relief to earn the win.
Trailing 11-7 in the bottom of the sixth, SUNY New Paltz scored five times to pick up a 12-11 win over Utica in the second game.
After McAdams singled home a run to narrow the deficit to 11-8, Esposito followed with a two-run single to left to make it 11-10. SUNY New Paltz loaded the bases when Buonamano was hit by a pitch and freshman Dean Glanzman (Commack, NY) delivered a sacrifice fly that scored John DeKams (Kings Park, NY) with tying run and moved Esposito to third. With runners on first and third, Buonamano stole second and a throwing error by Scranton catcher Ray Risucci allowed Esposito to score the go-ahead run. Esposito went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in. Sophomore Eric Velazquez (Chestnut, NY) went 2-for-4 as well and drove in two.
Sophomore Josh Gutes (Hauppauge, NY) pitched an inning and two thirds of hitless relief in his first appearance of the season to earn the win.
