SUNY New Paltz Men’s Volleyball Team Falls at Sacred Heart
FAIRFIELD, CT — The Sacred Heart University men’s volleyball team defeated SUNY-New Paltz, 3-1, in a non-conference match-up in Fairfield, Wednesday night. The Pioneers took the first game 30-27, dropped the second, 30-27, and closed out the match with wins of 30-22 and 30-26 in games three and four. SHU is now 11-4 with the win while New Paltz falls to 12-7.
Leading the way for Sacred Heart was senior Chris Skelton (Westerly, RI) who posted a team-high 13 kills. Skelton also collected five assists and four digs in the win. Senior Michael Burns (East Providence, RI) picked-up 12 kills of his own with seven digs. Junior Michael Gardner (Brookfield, WI) recorded 11 kills in 18 attempts against just three errors (.444). Gardner was also good for four block assists in the win.
Senior Doug Soviero (Huntington, NY) played in just two games tonight but posted impressive numbers with 10 kills in 17 attempts with just two errors (.471). He also had four digs. Senior Michael Maziarz (Wilbraham, MA) led the way defensively with a game-high 12 digs. Senior CJ Pinkney (Ringwood, NJ) passed out 54 assists with seven kills and 11 digs.
For the Hawks, Chris Ganje and Mike LaRocco each finished with 13 kills. Ganje completed the double double with a team-best 11 digs. Shawn Livingston recorded 10 digs from the libero position.
