Seveth Innning Run Leads Simpson Past SUNY New Paltz Baseball Team
FORT PIERCE, FL — The SUNY New Paltz baseball team is still searching for its first win of the 2004 season following a 3-2 loss to Simpson College this morning.
The Storm (5-4) pushed home a run in the bottom of seventh inning off SUNY New Paltz starter Greg Campo (Staten Island, NY) to earn the victory. The freshman, who dropped to 0-3 on the year, pitched six and a third innings and gave up eight hits and two earned runs. He also walked three and struck out four in his second complete game of the year.
SUNY New Paltz (0-8) scored single runs in the second and third innings. The Hawks tied the game at one in the top the second when freshman Dean Glanzman (Commack, NY) collected an RBI on a squeeze play that scored junior Blake Crocitto (Lake George, NY) from third. Crocitto led the inning off with a double and went 1-for-2 on the day.
The Hawks took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third when senior Silvestre Castro (New York, NY) and sophomore Vinny McAdams (Little Falls, NY) pulled off a double steal. Castro, who swiped third, scored on a throwing error by catcher Brett Murphy.
Simpson tied the game in the bottom of third and the game remained scoreless until the winning run scored in the seventh. Junior Casey Graham earned the victory for the Storm. He pitched seven innings and gave up four hits while walking six and striking out six.
Castro had two hits for New Paltz. Freshman John DeKams (Kings Park, NY) had his seven-game hitting streak stopped and now batting .522.
