Delia Wins SUNYAC Championship in 200 IM
BUFFALO, NY — Freshman Liz Delia (Oswego, NY) won a SUNYAC Championship in the 200 IM to highlight a strong first day for the SUNY New Paltz women’s swimming team at the 2004 conference championship in Buffalo, NY.
Delia won the event with a time of 2:14.88 to finish ahead of freshman Kelly Murphy of Oswego who came in at 2:15.02. Delia also helped the Hawks to a pair of third place finishes in the 200 freestyle and the 400 medley relays. She teamed with sophomore Joanna Masterson (Canandaigua, NY), freshman Ashley Williamson (Holland Patent, NY) and junior Danielle Lindner (Wantagh, NY) for a time of 1:40.56 in the 200 freestyle and combined with Lindner, Masterson and junior Mallory Grempel (Babylon, NY) to finish with a time of 4:07.27 in the 400-medley relay.
Among the other first-day highlights for the SUNY New Paltz swimming team was a fourth place effort from Masterson in the 50-yard freestyle (25:16) and a fourth place finish by Grempel in the 200 IM (2:16.71).
The women’s squad finished the day in third place with 146 points. Oswego is leading the way with 251 points followed by Geneseo who has 203. Cortland is in fourth place and just five points behind New Paltz.
The SUNY New Paltz men’s swimming team wrapped up the first day in fifth place with 112 points; and 10 points behind first place Brockport. Geneseo is the leader with 272.
The 200 free relay team of junior Kent Yeung (Flushing, NY), junior Ben Yousey (Beaver River, NY), senior Mark Costello (Staten Island, NY) and junior Jay Sousa (Albany, NY) came in fourth with a time of 1:29.13. The 400-medley relay team of Yeung, freshman Danny Lo (Toms River, NJ), senior Jon Sousa (Albany, NY) and Costello claimed third place with a mark of 3:38.55.
Jon Sousa enjoyed a fourth place finish in the 200-yard IM with a time of 1:59.63.
The second day of competition will last throughout the day on Friday.
