Hawks Finish Strong at 2003 ECAC Division III Swimming Championship

SEWELL, NJ — The SUNY New Paltz men’s and women’s swimming teams finished sixth and seventh respectively at the 2003 ECAC Division III Championship at Gloucester County Institute of Technology in Sewell, N.J. over the weekend.

On the third and final day of the meet, junior Kent Yeung finished among the top three in three events. Yeung, who won the 100-yard backstroke at last year’s event, was one second short of defending his championship. Seumas Quinn of Rowan swam a time of 52.87 to better Yeung’s mark of 53.87. Yeung was also second in the 50-yard freestyle (22.27) and third in the 100-yard butterfly (53.78).

Yeung completed a strong final day by helping the 400-yard medley relay team to a fourth place finish. Yeung teamed with freshman Danny Lo and seniors Jon Sousa and Todd Doornweerd to complete the race in 3:44.71.

The women’s 200 free relay team of juniors Danielle Lindner and Mallory Grempel, sophomore Joanna Masterson, and freshman Ashley Williamson came in third with a time of 1:42.89. Linder took fifth place in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:03.06 and Grempel was fifth in the 100 breaststroke at 1:11.60. A day earlier, Masterson finished third in the 100 freestyle (55.27) while Lindner was the runner up in the 200 backstroke (2:14.92).

Freshman Liz Delia was sixth and 10th in the 200 and 400 IM with times of 2:20.36 and 4:56.47.

Rowan finished ahead of Geneseo to win the both the men’s and women’s championships. On the men’s side, New Paltz had 276 points to finish ahead of conference rival Oswego who had 257. The New Paltz women finished with 302.5 points and were edged out of sixth place by Wellesley who had 304.5.
