NEW PALTZ — The Choral Ensembles of SUNY New Paltz will perform a program of music celebrating and bemoaning the season, including Morten Lauridsen’s “Mid-Winter Songs” based upon the poems of Robert Graves, along with works by Dufay, Brahms, Elgar, Purcell and Rutter. The performance, under the direction of Edward Lundergan and accompanied by Gary Palmieri, will be presented on Tuesday, December 9th at 8:00 p.m. in McKenna Theatre.

The evening’s program includes the 15th-century composer Guillaume Dufay’s “Bon jour, bon mois, La belle se siet” and “Ce jour de l’an,” performed by the Chamber Singers and accompanied by Joël Evans and Shirley Warren, recorders, and Brielle Cordingley, psaltery. Dufay was regarded as the premier composer of the 15th century.
The Chamber Singers will also perform “Die Berge sind spitz,” Op. 44 No. 8 and “Marznacht,” Op. 44 No. 12 by Johannes Brahms and “The Snow” by Edward Elgar, accompanied by Joan Chen, and Fanny Liu, violins.
“Mid-Winter Songs,” performed by the Concert Choir, are settings of poems by Robert Graves composed by the Grammy-nominated Morten Lauridsen. Lauridsen’s modern choral music is the most often-performed new pieces showing off the beauty of choral singing while illustrating inspiring text.
The College-Community Chorale will perform “Shivering Chorus” from “King Arthur” and “Blow, blow thou Winter Wind,” composed by Henry Purcell, as well as John Rutter’s “Good Ale.” Purcell was one of the greatest composers of the Baroque period.
