PianoSummer at New Paltz Institute/Festival which brings together advanced piano students and a distinguished international artist faculty to the campus of State University of New York at New Paltz will be held Monday, July 12 through Friday, August 1, 2003. The institute and festival offer a unique forum that integrates student and faculty performance, lectures, master classes, student recitals, and festival concerts, all of which are open to the public. PianoSummer is a project of the School of Fine & Performing Arts. It is under the leadership of founder and Artistic Director Vladimir Feltsman, the renowned pianist who holds the Distinguished Chair of Professor of Piano at SUNY New Paltz.
This year’s PianoSummer Festival will open with a Faculty Gala that features performances by each of the six faculty members, offering audiences a rare chance to hear several renowned and distinct pianists in one concert, while providing Institute students the opportunity to hear their instructors in performance. Other highlights include a master class and recital with special guest pianist Daniel Pollack, a recital with last year’s Jacob Flier Competition winner, 19-year old Daniel Shleyenkov, who recently won the New Jersey Young Artists Award, and a festival concert featuring “Masterpieces of the Russian Underground” highlighting works by composers such as Shostakovich and Schnittke who defied “official” Soviet artistic policies in the second half of the 20th century. Called “one of the best ideas of the year” by the New York Sun, “Masterpieces of the Russian Underground,” was presented as a multi-disciplinary festival conceived and directed by Mr. Feltsman at New York’s Lincoln Center this past winter.
PianoSummer Institute
The four-week PianoSummer Institute, which is now in its eighth year, provides a balanced program of piano studies and performance opportunities, so that participating pianists develop their own technical and interpretive skills. The most distinctive aspect of the institute is that every student works intensively with all faculty members, thereby gaining exposure to diverse teaching approaches, keyboard styles and musical ideologies, and encouraging each young artist to deepen his or her musical insights. The intensive schedule includes daily individual lessons, master classes, lecture-demonstrations, student recitals and festival concerts. All events are open to the public, providing students the opportunity to perform in front of an audience.
In addition to Mr. Feltsman, this summer’s faculty includes a roster of distinguished artist-teachers from noted music schools in the United States: Robert Hamilton, who teaches a studio of international students at Arizona State University School of Music; Phillip Kawin, a member of the piano faculty of Manhattan School of Music since 1989 who has been guest professor at the Moscow Conservatory International Summer School, the Cliburn Piano Institute and the London Piano Festival; Paul Ostovsky, who was a student of Jacob Flier at the Moscow Conservatory and is now a Professor at the Conservatory of Music at Purchase College, State University of New York; Alexander Slobodyanik, Visiting Professor at the St. Petersburg Conservatory in Russian and on the faculty member of Montclair State University; and Eteri Andjaparidze, Associate Professor and head of the Piano Department at DePaul University School of Music in Chicago.
The diversity of the faculty is intentional, exposing students to varied performing traditions, ideologies and cultures. Approximately 40 students from throughout the world participate in the PianoSummer Institute.
PianoSummer Festival
This year’s PianoSummer Festival will open with a Faculty Gala featuring performances by all faculty members on Saturday, July 12, providing audiences and students a rare opportunity to hear these distinguished musicians practice their craft. On Saturday, July 19 internationally renowned pianist Daniel Pollack, called a musician of “astounding brilliance” by the New York Times, will give a recital of works by Bach-Siloti, Chopin, Liszt and Schumann.
Festival concerts will also include “Masterpieces of the Russian Underground” on Saturday, July 26, featuring works by Shostakovich, Knaifel, Schnittke and Silvestrov as performed by Vladimir Feltsman on piano, Peter Krysa on violin and Yosif Feigelson on cello. The concert celebrates the remarkable body of work produced by those artists who refused to bow to the conventions and restrictions of the Soviet system, which sought to use the power of art for its own political ends. Conceived and directed by the Russian-born Feltsman, who himself experienced the repressive cultural policies of the Soviet system before immigrating the United States in 1987, “Masterpieces of the Russian Underground” was presented by the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center as a multi-disciplinary festival in January 2003 in New York, Portland, OR and Tucson, AZ.
The PianoSummer Festival finale, the Symphony Gala with the Hudson Valley Philharmonic under the direction of Mr. Feltsman will take place on Friday, August 1, featuring a concerto performance by the First Place Winner of the Jacob Flier Piano Competition. The program will also include Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet and Shostakovich Symphony No. 9
All concerts take place in McKenna Theatre at 8:00 p.m. Please see attached for complete program and ticket information.
