RPI Scores 37 Runs In Doubleheader Sweep of New Paltz Baseball

NEW PALTZ — The Red Hawks of RPI scored 37 times Wednesday at Loren Campbell Field in a doubleheader sweep of New Paltz. RPI improves to 14-7 on the season, while the Hawks slip to 8-17.

RPI took game one 17-1 thanks to a one-hit complete game from junior pitcher Erik Thunell (Suffern, NY). Thunell struck out eight batters and had a no-hitter through five and 2/3 innings before Silvester Castro (New York, NY) blasted a solo homerun to rightfield.

Matt Faraone (Suffern, NY) and Seth Shuket (Albany, NY) each ripped three-run homeruns in a nine-run seventh inning for the Red Hawks. Brian Marine (Shrewsbury, MA) and Nick Parenteau (Raymond, ME) each added solo homers in the inning.

In game two, RPI looked as if they would run away with the game early as the Red Hawks went up 9-2 in the third inning. New Paltz stormed back in the bottom half of the inning thanks to seven runs on six hits, including a two-RBI double by catcher Jeff Cote’ (Mechanicsville, MD). RPI, however, tacked on six runs in the fourth and four in the sixth to put the game out of reach.

Pat Hughes (Delmar, NY), Ryan Meron (Plattsburgh, NY), and Seth Shuket each had three hits. The trio combined for 12 RBI in the game. Brian Rickert (East Greenbush, NY) got the win in relief.

Randy Walters (Collierville, TN) had three hits to pace the Hawks while Sean Wachter (Miller Place, NY), Rich Bizelia (Massapequa, NY), and Cote’ each added two apiece. Bizelia and Cote’ combined for five runs batted in.
