New Paltz Drops Two To Open Baseball Season

FORT PIERCE, FLA. — SUNY New Paltz led in both games it played on Wednesday, but had nothing to show for it at the end of the day, after losing twice in their opponents’ final at-bat to open the 2000 baseball season.

New Paltz lost to Knox (Ill.) College, 8-7, after allowing four runs (two unearned) in the bottom of the seventh inning, and later was edged 5-4 in eight innings against N.J.I.T.

In the nightcap, the (0-2) Hawks took an early 4-0 lead, but made three errors which allowed the (1-4) Highlanders to score two runs in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. New Paltz starter Shawn Urban (Schenectady, NY/Mohonansen) pitched well over the first seven innings, allowing scattering five hits while striking out seven.

Against Knox, New Paltz had two outs in the bottom of the seventh when the winning run scored for the (2-3) Prarie Fire.

On Thursday, New Paltz faces St. Mary’s (Md.) at noon, and plays Scranton at 3 p.m. as its spring trip to Fort Pierce continues.
