New Paltz Competes at NYU Invitational
BRONX, NY — The SUNY New Paltz men and women’s croos country teams opened up their 2002 season at the NYU Invitational this morning at Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, NY.
The men’s squad finished eighth among 26 scoring teams with 231 points. Shippenburg won the meet with 63 points, Widener finished second with 71, followed by host NYU who was third with 131.
For the men, senior Phil Goodwin (Rochester, NY) was the Hawks’ top finisher. He was 32nd among a field of 242 with a time of 28:18. Junior John Zarella (Mahopac, NY) completed the course in 28:18 and was 38th. Junior Dan Holton (Rhinebeck, NY) also finished among the top 50 placing 43rd in 28:38.
The women’s squad placed 12th among 27 scoring teams. The Hawks had 290 points. The College of New Jersey finished first with 49 points. Wesleyan was second with 56 followed by Shippensburg who was third with 161.
Junior Rebecca Demeri (Wantagh, NY) was the top finisher for SUNY New Paltz. She finished 24th among 260 runners with a time of 26:06. Freshman Janet Walsh (Baldwinsville, NY) was 27th in her collegiate debut with a time of 26:16. Kate Choromanski (Shelton, CT), also a freshman, turned in a strong performance in her first collegiate race placing 38th with a time of 26:38.
