NEW PALTZ — On Wednesday, May 1, 2002, Jim Jarmusch-award-winning director of films including Ghost Dog, Dead Man, and Night on Earth-will present a lecture at SUNY New Paltz in Lecture Center room 100 at 7:30 PM. The public is welcome to attend and the event is free.
Jarmusch has been hailed as “the godfather of American independent film,” and has lived up to that title by accumulating an amazing array of prizes and awards. In 1980, he graduated from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, and began his directing career with Permanent Vacation, his film school final project. In 1984 he released Stranger Than Paradise, which was expanded from a 30-minute short, made two years earlier. The film received the Camera d’Or prize at Cannes and was named Best Picture of the year by the National Society of Film Critics. It established Jarmusch’s cool, measured style, which looks at America through the eyes of people from foreign lands.
In preparation for the lecture, the Student Art Alliance at SUNY New Paltz has arranged for several of Jarmusch’s films to be shown on campus. Selected films by the director will be viewed and followed by discussion. On both evenings, the films begin at 8:00 PM in Coykendal Science Building Auditorium. The public is invited to attend these free events.
