Oneonta Basketball Leaves Town With Two Wins
NEW PALTZ — The Oneonta Red Dragons left New Paltz Tuesday night with two victories over the men and women’ s Hawk basketball teams. The men’s final was 71-69 and the women’s final was 73-41.
The New Paltz men took the game right down to the wire as Ben Davey (Andover, NJ) converted a layup with 12 seconds to play to tie the score at 69. But Oneonta guard Rashad Clark’s running jumper with 2 seconds to play clinched the game for the Red Dragons. The Hawks were down by as many as 11 late in the second half but were able to battle back to take the game to the end. Pat Stirk (Milford, CT), playing in his final home game led the Hawks with 19 points, 14 rebounds, and 5 blocked shots. Davey added 13 and Danny Goldberg had 11.
The women’s team headed into the locker room tied with the Red Dragons at 26. But the Lady Hawks were blitzed in the second half, getting outscored 47-15. New Paltz trailed by just 6 with 11:27 left in the game but could only muster 6 more points the rest of the way. Turnovers plagued the Hawks all night long as they gave the ball away 34 times. Silver Williams (Newburgh, NY) had 16 to pace the women’s team while Lindsay Dakin (Andover, CT) had 10.
Men and women’s basketball will close out their seasons on the road this weekend at Brockport and Geneseo.
