“Bibliography”: Dorsky Museum announces call for Hudson Valley Artists 2024

The Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art at SUNY New Paltz invites artists working in all media to submit proposals for its annual exhibition of contemporary art made by artists in the Hudson Valley.

“Bibliography,” the 17th annual Hudson Valley Artists exhibition, will be curated by Curator & Exhibitions Manager Sophie Landres and will run from Feb. 4 – April 16, 2024, in The Dorsky Museum’s Alice and Horace Chandler Gallery and North Gallery.

The deadline for artist submissions to “Bibliography: Hudson Valley Artists 2024” is Sunday, Nov. 19, at midnight. Submissions may be made online by following this link.

About the Exhibition

“Bibliography” seeks to assemble an exhibition in which each artist contextualizes their work by positioning it in dialog with books. In lieu of a determined and thus determining theme for uniting the work on display, books will provide connective tissue between the exhibiting artists. They will be included in the exhibition’s installation and considered in the selection process – not to assess the artists’ intellectual proficiency or educational pedigree, but rather as evidence that the submitted artworks exist within a broader body of knowledge and expression outside of any individual artist’s idiosyncratic practice.

The relationship between the books and the submitted artwork can take various forms. It may, for example, illustrate a direct linkage in which literature specifically informed or inspired the artwork’s creation. More loosely, the books may be possible entry points for thinking about how the works signify or how art processes yield certain aesthetic, social or political results. Although the connections between the books and the art should be perceivable, the former can be offered as the type of productive tangent that often emerges during studio visits, yet has no place in a professional artist statement.

Beyond revealing illuminating dimensions of the artists’ thinking processes, the intention of this call is to demonstrate how ideas circulate across disciplines and mediums, and how ideas are continuously shared, reinterpreted, extended and conditioned by the ways in which they are encountered.

Submission guidelines

The Hudson Valley Artists exhibition is open to all artists with a permanent mailing address and active fine art practice in Albany, Columbia, Dutchess, Greene, Orange, Putnam, Rensselaer, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster and Westchester Counties. Current SUNY New Paltz students and Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art staff, advisory board members, and their immediate families are not eligible.

Eligible artists are invited to submit a maximum of six images or video files of work created in 2020 or later. All types of fine art and all art mediums will be considered. There is no application fee.

In addition to submitting a maximum of six artwork image files, applicants will list at least one and up to three related books. They will include the title, author, a link to more information on the book (such as a publisher’s description or book review), and a very brief explanation of the book’s relevance to the art submission.

Brief proposals for new works including installation, social practice or performance may also be submitted. The Museum will not cover the material expenses related to producing a new work.

The Hudson Valley Artists Annual Purchase Award of $3,000 will be used to acquire one or more artworks from the exhibition for the Museum’s permanent collection. This Purchase Award is made possible thanks to the Alice and Horace Chandler Art Acquisition Fund. Artists whose work has been purchased in the past include Laura Cannamela, Richard Edelman, Charles Geiger, Holly Hughes, Patrick Kelley, Deb Lucke, Nestor Madalengoita, Stephen Niccolls, Libby Paloma, Elisa Pritzker, James Ransome, Adie Russell and Jean-Marc Superville Sovak, among others.

Submission deadline: By midnight on Sunday, Nov. 19
