A best value in higher education: SUNY New Paltz ranked among top Northeast universities for 2024 by U.S. News & World Report

SUNY New Paltz was rated the No. 8 best public university in the Northeast and a best value in higher education, among many other recognitions, in the 2024 edition of U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges Rankings.

The University’s strong showing on this year’s list includes rising performance on the lists of Best Value Schools (No. 56 this year, up from No. 63 last year) and Top Performers on Social Mobility (No. 21 this year, up from No. 39), both of which recognize institutions that provide a strong return on investment and help students advance up the socioeconomic ladder.

New Paltz also landed Top-20 rankings among Northeast institutions on staple lists including Best Colleges for Veterans (No. 8) and Best Undergraduate Teaching (No. 13).

Individual programs earned accolades from U.S. News as well, as New Paltz appeared on lists for the Best Undergraduate Teaching Programs, Best Undergraduate Business Programs, Best Undergraduate Psychology Programs and Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs.

On the ranking of all colleges (public and private) in the Northeast, New Paltz ranked No. 24.

The U.S. News & World Report evaluated hundreds of colleges and universities this year, based on publicly available data on indicators like first-year student retention and graduation rates, and reputational factors measured by peer-assessment survey.

Here’s the full breakdown of SUNY New Paltz’s honors on these focused lists:

SUNY New Paltz was ranked among the Best Undergraduate Business Programs, Best Psychology Programs, and the Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs. These lists are based on peer surveys sent to large and diverse groups of higher education professional.

Best Colleges for Veterans (No. 8 in the Northeast): This list includes high-performing institutions that serve a significant number of students who are veterans or active military members. New Paltz has consistently appeared as one of the top SUNY institutions on this list, a testament to the outstanding support delivered by the Office of Veteran & Military Services to the hundreds of military-affiliated students it serves each year.

Top Performers in Social Mobility (No. 21 in the Northeast): Colleges that help students climb the socioeconomic ladder with high graduation rates and successful outcomes for recipients of federal Pell Grants, which are generally awarded to students and families with great financial need.

Best Value Schools (No. 56 in the Northeast): U.S. News calculates this list by comparing schools’ places in academic rankings against the cost of tuition and other financial aid-related factors.

Best Undergraduate Teaching (No. 13 in the Northeast): This list polls top college administrators on which colleges have the strongest commitment to teaching undergraduates.
