New students: Have some fun and meet new people during Welcome Week!

 

The newest SUNY New Paltz Hawks are taking their first flight on campus, and the University is offering a huge slate of Welcome Week events from Aug. 24-30.

It all starts with Move-in Day on Thursday, Aug. 24, as student, faculty and staff volunteers help new resident students settle into their campus homes-away-from-home.

Aug. 24 also features an array of social events across campus, from a barbeque at Peregrine Hall, to general meetups for first-year and transfer students, to a parents-only “Sip and Cry” in the College Terrace.

Some highlights from the next few days include:

Enjoy the beauty of New Paltz either on or off-campus on Friday, Aug. 25 with Mindfulness Walking on a trek that starts outside the Student Union atrium, or an easy hike along the Millbrook Preserve. Both events start at 10 a.m. There will also be a hike on the same day at 11 a.m. across the River to Ridge Trail.

New students can get familiar with the local business community at the Get to know New Paltz Fair, Aug. 25 starting at 12 p.m. in the Student Union Building Concourse, then get to know their peers during a Novelty Fair of games, prizes and more at 6 p.m. in the SUB MPR.

Meet the local knitting community on campus through a Knit & Chat, Aug. 25 at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., hosted by the Career Resource Center and Center for Student Engagement.

Learn about the benefits of ethical fashion at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 26, in College Hall, then join members of our faculty Sustainability Community for a Village Vintage Clothing Tour in New Paltz starting at 1 p.m.

Enjoy an outdoor movie screening of “Pitch Perfect” on Parker Quad, Aug. 26 at 7:30 p.m.

Looking for last-minute dorm room items? Spend a day at the Poughkeepsie Galleria Mall with a bus trip on Sunday, Aug. 27, departing from the Route 32 parking lot at 12 p.m.

Let’s talk about consent! New students are invited to attend the Sex Signals workshop on Monday, Aug. 28, at 8 p.m. in Studley Theatre. This interactive event exploring cultural messaging around gender, sexual health and intimate relationships.

And of course, New Student Convocation, the official welcome event for all new students, on Aug. 30. A campus tradition, this year’s event will offer opportunities for students to connect with their future professors and celebrate both the academic and social life of SUNY New Paltz.
