First-year students: Sign up for Group Advising Sessions this summer and be ready for success this semester
There’s still time for new, first-year SUNY New Paltz students to sign up for Group Advising Sessions through the Office of Academic Advising!
These sessions, offered as part of new student Orientation, are often led by peer advisors and designed to help new students get experience with useful self-service tools like My Schedule Planner and the Progress Report, and also to prepare for their one-on-one advising appointments with professional academic advisors during the fall semester.
If you’re a first-year student interested in taking advantage of this opportunity, please act now! Summer Group Advising Sessions are free and open for all incoming first-year students, but they are scheduled to end soon.
New students who have not attended a Group Advising Session yet should check their @newpaltz.edu email for details on how to sign up.
“We believe it’s important to provide our new students with personalized, scaffolded support as they begin to develop an understanding, an appreciation, and a shared sense of responsibility for their own educational planning as a New Paltz undergraduate student,” said Dante Cantú, executive director of academic advising & student success. “And our trained peer advisors are a wonderful resource to assist them in the early stage of the process.”
The online Orientation educational modules are a prerequisite for Group Advising Sessions. These modules, which first-year students should complete as part of Orientation, help students learn to:
Use advising tools and resources to create their schedule;
Understand the College’s General Education requirements, including the appropriate course categories;
Identify what they need to complete their schedule and be prepared for their individual advising session.
Group Advising Sessions are just one example of how the Office of Academic Advising works to provide New Paltz students with a high-touch educational experience and a strong community of care. Learn more here about advising for new students at New Paltz.
