Distinguished Speaker Series presents an evening with Arthur O. Sulzberger Jr., in conversation with James H. Ottaway Jr.

The SUNY New Paltz Distinguished Speaker Series presents a special evening with two leaders in journalism, Arthur O. Sulzberger Jr. ’06 HON and James H. Ottaway Jr. ’18 HON, discussing “Truth, Trust and the Future of Journalism,” Wednesday, March 4, at 7:30 p.m., in Lecture Center 100 on the New Paltz campus.

Sulzberger, the chairman and former publisher of The New York Times Company, will address some of the most significant challenges reporters and news outlets face today: In an era of rapidly breaking news, how can news outlets protect their integrity and prevent misleading and deliberately false information from spreading? Is the loss of quality journalism a threat to our democracy?

This timely address on the state of modern journalism will take place just one month after the announcement that The New York Times Company’s total subscription figure had surpassed five million.

Following his talk, Sulzberger will respond to questions from James H. Ottaway Jr., the retired director and senior vice president of Dow Jones, and former chairman of Ottaway Newspapers. Ottaway is also the creator of the James H. Ottaway Sr. Visiting Professorship of Journalism, the first endowed professorship at SUNY New Paltz, which to date has brought 19 world-class journalists to teach seminars at the College.

Both Ottaway and Sulzberger are Hudson Valley residents. They discussed their shared love of and commitment to the region in a recent Almanac Weekly interview.

All are welcome to attend this Distinguished Speaker Series event. Tickets are $10, and advance purchase is recommended. Tickets can be purchased online via this link or by calling the Box Office at (845) 257–3880. There is no charge for current SUNY New Paltz students who present school ID, though there is a limited quantity of free tickets available to students.

A dessert reception will follow the conversation.
